The Hawaiian Diet

The Amazing Hawaii Diet!

Health Benefits of the Native Hawaiian Diet

The popular low-fat/salt/cholesterol Hawaii Diet is delicious and loaded with healthy benefits that help dieters lose weight naturally, without feeling deprived.

Pioneered by Hawaii's famous Dr. Terry Shintani, whose research proved the value of the diet for a range of health issues, the food choices are based on indigenous Hawaiian foods and healthy selections from other cuisines.  Hence, the "new" Hawaii Diet, is not only satisfying, but high in nutritional value that can support wellness and even help diabetics and others to achieve a healthier balance, with less need for some medications.

Before contact with the outside world, the early Hawaiians were slim and fit on a natural diet of the fish, fruit and vegetables found in the Hawaiian islands.  The new Hawaiian cuisine creates a balanced, wholesome variety of foods in a diet that is easy to stick to.

Maui's Ka'anapali Beach Hotel is a pioneer in Hawaiian hospitality, presenting authentic Hawaiian traditions to its guests, and offering innovative Hawaiian cuisines. During our stay at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, we found a sampling of Hawaiian native cuisine created in a new way by chef Thomas Matsumoto that was delicious and healthy.

Following our tour of the hotel’s exotic tropical gardens, we were seated at the beautiful outdoor Tiki Terrace restaurant within view of the languid expanse of Ka’anapali Beach, and dined on savory fish and vegetables combined with subtle new flavors and steamed in ti leaves, along with a colorful and flavorful variety of other dishes that were palette-pleasing and artfully presented.

"Amazingly, there are no limits to the amount of complex carbohydrates you can eat—and with no ill effects," Chef Tom says of the Hawaiian cuisine.

Although not a staple of mainlanders, poi is a staple of the early Hawaiian diet and has been be called “the most perfect food, for its high protein, low fat content, and perfect digestibility." Many other native foods now play a major part in the new Hawaiian cuisine for their nutritional value, as well as for their low-fat content.

Tiki Terrace serves a selection of tempting desserts that are mostly designed for the sweet tooth and not necessarily for the healthy diet, but the overall balance was definitely on the side of food that boosts your nutrition in the most flavorful way--pleasing the palette and offering delectible choices.
